Terms of Usage for Core Samples (Provisional Translation)

National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience
Network Center for Earthquake, Tsunami and Volcano

Enacted: September 29, 2017
Revised: March 26, 2020

1.  Objective

  • These Terms of Usage stipulate the necessary procedures and items for the use of core samples (rock core, cuttings and other specimens extracted during excavations) obtained from the observation networks operated and managed by the Network Center for Earthquake, Tsunami and Volcano (hereinafter “NWC”), as well as other scientific drillings, in accordance with NWC’s Guidelines Regarding Data Disclosure (enacted September 28, 2017, revised March 26, 2020).

2.  Usage of Core Samples

  •  Given that core samples are owned by NWC and in light of the burden involved in their provision, in principle usage is limited to collaborative research. Please exercise consideration to allow the fair usage of limited and irreplaceable core samples by many researchers.

(1)  Application for Usage

  •  To allow us to grasp the state of usage of core samples, we request that you make an application using the format provided (Form 1), based upon which your request will be approved or denied. The amount(s) of sample(s) to be used will in principle be the designated amounts displayed below, conforming to an analytical formula (Form 2).

(2)  Prohibition of Redistribution

  •  NWC retains ownership rights for core samples. Redistribution (secondary usage) is prohibited for any reason whatsoever. Furthermore, selling of samples is strictly prohibited.

(3)  Reporting and Citation of Results

  •  When results have been obtained using core samples, please make sure to report this to NWC via the research officer in charge at NIED. For publication of research findings, please consult with the person responsible at NWC. If no contact is forthcoming, the service may be suspended even if core samples have already been used. Furthermore, if using results in an academic paper, please clearly acknowledge the fact that samples were provided by NWC.

3.  Other

  •  In principle, core samples will be cut along the core axis and divided into two pieces. At least, the half of the sample will be saved as archive perpetually. Please be aware that depending on the condition of core samples, it may not be possible to provide them.
If borrowing samples temporarily for use as an exhibit, please exercise the greatest care during the transportation and display of samples, and return them promptly after usage. Separate administrative processes may be required in such instances.
